Traveling with children when the father is in prison – how to handle travel consent for children

Travel consent is a document that parents must sign when a child travels to a country where it is required. Airlines also have requirements for travel consent. The travel consent applies when the child travels with only one of the parents, alone, or with another adult.

The purpose is to show that both guardians approve the trip. For the travel consent to be valid, it must be signed by both parents.

How the father signs if he is in prison

When the child’s father is in prison, it can be more complicated to get the travel consent signed in time. What works best is to plan and order the travel consent well in advance of departure. The original is sent to the father for signature and then returned, so that you have a physical document to travel with.

Here is what you can do when the father is in prison

  1. Order the travel consent from MinorClearPass.
  2. The mother prints and signs the travel consent.
  3. Send the original to the father’s address in the prison.
  4. The father then sends the travel consent back.

When both parents have signed and the original is back, the travel consent is ready to be used during the trip.

Things to keep in mind

Keep in mind that because the father is in prison, under national laws and rules it may be a requirement that the father approves the trip. This means that the mother should not travel abroad with the child if the father has not approved the trip.
