There are several rules for how a passport photo should be taken. Here, we explain how the photo should be taken and how almost the whole world follows nearly the same rules.
There are usually two ways to get a passport photo taken. The first is to visit the relevant authority and have your photo taken when you apply for a passport. In some cases, you can also take the photo yourself.
Background and lighting
Make sure your photo is taken against a plain, light background with no patterns or visible texture. The lighting should be even and clear, without shadows on your face or in the background. There should also be nothing visible behind you.
Face and expression
The photo must clearly show your current appearance and should have been taken within the last month. Your full face must be visible, with your eyes open and looking straight at the camera. Keep a neutral expression, with your mouth closed and no smile. If you wear glasses, make sure there is no glare or reflection on the lenses. Head coverings are not allowed unless they are worn for religious or medical reasons.
What level of smiling is acceptable?
Smiling can change the way your face appears. Since a passport photo is used to verify your identity, this can sometimes make it more difficult to match your appearance to the photo. For this reason, passport photo guidelines usually require a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
